How to Debrief Your Last Year – a Free eBook
2023 was such a full year – so much to debrief! I lost my best friend from college to brain cancer, but gained a granddaughter. We moved from our home of 30 years. I watched my mom slide further into dementia.
So I don’t want to rush into 2024 without taking a deeper look at how God has moved in my life. How about you?
Most of us need help reflecting. What worked, and what do we need to learn? At the end of a year, I like to block out a couple of hours to bring out my journal and review it. And then to pray and wrestle through some questions that help me put root issues in perspective.
Over the years, I’ve helped debrief hundreds of people. I’ve written a number of blog posts. And I’ve written a practical debriefing tool to help people go through that exercise-the”Year-End Debrief Tool.”
A lot of people have used it to help them process their lives and live with greater intentionality in the years to come. As a blog reader of mine, if you’d like a copy of it, just respond in the comment section below and I’ll send you a digital version as a gift. Happy New Year! May it be your best one yet.

You are a deep, passionate and spiritual friend. Love grows when men walk together with authenticity and accountability as their hickory canes. Let’s traverse 2024 with the ferocity and faith of Jesus. Love you.
Thanks, Butch. Yes to authenticity and accountability!

Yes, include me, Seth! This has been quite a year for me as well, from losing my Dad in January to having close friends pass away, to within the past ten days walking away from a narcissistic relationship with a longtime friend. I know the importance of debriefing, and this year is no different! His blessings to you and yours and a very happy new year!!!
Hey Sue – great to hear from you. I’m sorry about your losing your father and some friends. So hard!
I would love to have a digital version of this resource.
Thank you for living for HIM.
Seth, I’d love to read this. Too often I reflect but keep going without necessary course adjustments. This is a good prompt, thank you!
Would love the debrief tool! Blessings in 2024 on all your efforts for the Kingdom!
It hurts to think of Jean Barnes losing ground. What a vital person I knew her to be so many decades ago. I have a sneaky suspicion God is still using her. Availability has been a life style! How blessed I am to have called her friend! And my walk with Christ is a result of her influence in my life.
Now I get to be a part in Seth’s ministry as a result of trying to run Jean down after 50 years of our being out of the Army community.
Carol – how wonderful to hear from you! Thanks for getting in touch. In my dad’s last year, I was able to connect with a number of his old friends and it meant a lot. I would love to hear more about your experiences with my mom. I’ll connect with you by email.
I just began deliberate journaling. I write frequently, but nothing methodical or organized. And the idea of debriefing is just wonderful. And to plan 2924. I was already pondering the idea. I want my 80th year to be the best yet!
I’ll bet it will be!
I have so enjoyed reviewing my year per the Debriefing Tool. I intend to share it with others I think will benefit. I’m on page 7. I want to list the journaling prompts, hence I am here to see if I can copy an paste them in my document. I see I must check the copy sent me.
I just re-read your testimony, Seth. I remember the chaplain saying he was not the kind of Christian your mom and his wife were. Unfortunately, it was evident. He was not “crazy”. I liked your mom’s “crazy”. We went to a black church in DC that Christmas. Now that was crazy–as well as wonderful!
I’m still at it and going pretty strong for 80. And I’m not done! I know God’s not done with me or in me. I love your writing.
Carol – pls cut and paste! The debriefing tool is there for free to be used in any way that is helpful.
And, thanks for continuing to encourage me with your stories about my mom. I love that she was crazy in a good way!
Yes please! I would like a digital copy. And thanks!
Seth, thanks for creating this tool and sharing it. I’d like a copy.

1/2 way through your book “The Art of Listening Prayer” – an excellent follow-up to the numerous writings I’ve loved from Peter Lord. Thanks you for your dedication and writing which helps in developing a relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Blessings,
Glenn
Hi! please send me a copy as well, would love to learn from you and debrief my year
I would love a copy please!
I know I am late to this party, but because I am about to start my first ever sabbatical, I’d love to get this debriefing tool.
And I didn’t know you moved from your long-term home where you raised your kids! That would have been major. I pray you and Karen have great peace and love unleashed in your new digs.
Praying for you regarding your Mom. It was difficult going through that with my Dad, and I’ve been with my Mom the last few days and it is emotionally challenging watching those we love lose their formerly firm footing in this world, both physically and mentally.
Thanks Melinda. Just returning from a trip to Bethel. Was thinking about Mozambique while out there!
