Brittany sells her dream to help Haiti

Tuesday night we were on the skype conference call with Miguel. His story was breaking our hearts. A bunch of us were crowded in the room at the Hylton’s house. Brittany, Jeff and Alycea Hylton’s ten year-old (w/ the cowboy hat in the picture), was listening.

Miguel told the story of the Haitian mom who had to take her daughter whose leg had just been amputated back with her to Port-au-Prince to find her other two kids. And it hit Brittany in a way that she just had to do something. But what?

Then she realized what she could do. Brittany has a dream of owning a horse. For five years she has been putting money in a jar to save up and buy a horse. She has been a great saver. Everything goes into that dream.

And Brittany realized, “I can help the people of Haiti by trading in my dream of a horse and giving the money to them.” So she emptied her piggy bank and gave everything she owned to the people of Haiti.

Her example preaches a sermon to my soul this morning. What will I give to the people of Haiti? What will you give? If we can learn from Brittany, the sacrifice to bring hope may be steep. But for people like the Haitian mom risking everything to find her lost children, it may be the only hope she has.

  • This resonates well with me. I understand that dream, as I was one of those little girls who dreamed and prayed all of my young years for a horse. God eventually answered my prayers with one for a time.

But, I understand what it would have taken to give up the savings for such a dream. This has challenged me to rethink so much of what I consider “needs.” Thanks for sharing this story.

  • Brittany, you carry the Father’s heart! Your sacrifice reminds me of the verse, “Let us not love with word and tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18. You go girl! And kudos to the parents for developing such a sweet spirit in her.

  • Wow Brittany, Thank you for your sacrifice, of your hopes and dreams. I so appreciate your heart!!

I am asking the Lord what does He want me to do, or to give or give up for my brothers ans sisters in Haiti. I am listening Lord???

  • Brittany, your obedience to God’s call is incredible. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us to do the same, to listen and obey!

  • Very cool, I hope God brings this story to the ears
of a christian horse owner. where I live SE of Seattle there are tons of horses that I never see being ridden.
God is the Dream giver, You didn’t give up yours, just
    postponed it for Gods timing.

  • AMAZING story! Reminds me of the lady who anointed Jesus with a full jar of expensive perfume. She gave everything because her heart was moved with compassion and love.

    Thanks for sharing

  • Yea Brittany!!
    Yea!
    Yea!
    Yea!
When you get to heaven, you are going to get a lot of Haitian hugs along with the one Jesus gives you.
