Sometimes we make following Jesus too complicated. So here’s a quick devotional thought on this fine spring day for those of us who aspire to follow him.

Jesus said, “Follow my example” (Jn 13:15) and “Do what I’ve been doing” (Jn 14:12).

John said, “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”(1 John 2:6)

The question is: How did Jesus walk? What can we observe about the patterns of his life? When you read the gospels, what actions do you see him engaged in?

The problem is that, instead of looking at specifically how he walked, we tend to look at what other people say about how he walked. We tend to read theology books. We read the Old Testament before the New. And we read the letters of Paul before the gospels.

Look at the book of Luke, for example. Begin with chapter 2 and go to chapter 9 writing down everything you see Jesus do. Here is a quick list of the action verbs showing us what Jesus did.
  • He talked about faith
  • He was baptized
  • He went on a journey and fought the devil
  • He read Scripture
  • He received a call to preach to the poor, to set the captives free, to open blind eyes, to release the oppressed.
  • He cast out demons
  • He healed the sick
  • He preached
  • He called disciples to follow him
  • He prayed all night
  • He taught about how to love
  • He raised the dead
  • He sent his disciples on a journey to do the same.
If I’m discipling a new believer, I want to make it simple. I want to look at what Jesus did and encourage them to do the same. Does it have to be more complicated than this?
